Dancing to End Homelessness in South Bend – Local Company, enFocus, Preparing to Groove
It’s not often that working to end the cycle of homelessness is all fun and games. However, once a year in South Bend, Indiana, the Center for the Homeless invites local community leaders to leave it all on the dance floor in a lively, friendly competition.”
enFocus, a local South Bend-based nonprofit, is usually focused on economic development through talent retention in the South Bend region, but for the next several weeks, the enFocus team will also be helping to fight homelessness. For a few years now, the enFocus team has been committed to supporting The Center for the Homeless in South Bend, by participating in its Dancing With Our Stars event to raise funds necessary to break the cycle of homelessness.
The Center’s longstanding mission has served more than 60,000 homeless people, over 27 years, with the goal to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness.
Much more than just a shelter, The Center has also been providing jobs, training, and a great deal more. Programs and services include emergency shelter, transitional housing, off-site housing, adult self-sufficiency training, job training, education and coaching, children’s support and development services, youth enrichment, and early childhood intervention.
While the enFocus team is training with a professional dance instructor for the April 21st dancing event, they’re also working on a more important task: fundraising on behalf of The Center. Dancing With Our Stars uses a voting mechanism (much like the show it’s based on) to calculate the winner of the event. Each “vote” is a $41 donation to The Center, which represents the cost of housing one person at the shelter for one night.
enFocus has started a WonderWe campaign as their digital home base to raise their target of $20,000 and to keep their team and supporters aware of the mission and their progress. enFocus became aware of WonderWe through a client that recently used the crowdfunding platform with great success.
Specifically, WonderWe’s Peer-to-Peer tool is the perfect way for enFocus to bring the team together digitally as well as personally. Team members dedicated to the cause are creating their own personal campaigns, essentially replicating the main campaign, and adding their names, faces – their own personal brands and commitment – to the goal.
“We researched other platforms to manage our campaign and liked WonderWe the best because of our client’s great experience and also because of its donor supported approach to crowdfunding, rather than taking fees out of our campaign,” Gillian said.
“We’ll be showing off our moves, or the humorous lack thereof, with a dance-battle themed performance.”
“The event raises funds for The Center’s next twelve months and while we like to think our dancing moves will help us win the competition, what really counts is the funds we raise for the Center for the Homeless.”
Gillian is asking supporters to consider voting for enFocus by donating $41, as this is the cost to house and feed a guest at the Center for one day!
