JusticeForGina – The Untimely Death of Regina Thurman at Jackson County Detention Center Pushes Daughter and Kansas City Community to Seek Justice.
Nichole Aguirre is asking Kansas City to join her campaign on behalf of her deceased mother, Regina Thurman, who died on January 20, 2017, after experiencing a health crisis just hours after being detained at the Jackson County Detention Center for a minor violation.
Witnesses allege Thurman was seen lying on the jail floor in pain, crying out for help and writhing in pain, but no aid was delivered by JCDC staff or nurses, until Thurman coded. Soon after, Thurman was dead.
Aguirre announced in June:
Aguirre announced in June she is running a WonderWe crowdfunding campaign to fight for justice over her mother’s death. The money raised will pay for expert witnesses, professionals who must be brought in to provide their expertise specific to the factual circumstances that caused Thurman’s death. Without these experts, Aguirre’s case will not move forward.
“My mother’s minor parole violation became a death sentence at the hands of people who refused her the emergency care she needed. It was well within reach to prevent her death and they didn’t respond,” said Aguirre. “Instead of helping her, they accused her of faking it and ignored her obvious symptoms and pleas for help. An animal would have received more attention and care.”
While Nichole says she does want justice for her mother, she also wants the community to lock arms with her as a united front demanding that the JCDC be held accountable for its notorious negligence.
The Jackson County Detention Center:
The Jackson County Detention Center, was reported to be “systemically deficient” by the FBI in 2015, with egregious behavior prompting federal investigations including a recent raid in June, 2017 carried out by more than 200 law enforcement officials. Another JCDC inmate died on July 21, 2017 after being strapped to a chair and forgotten.
“I want to fight for justice for my mom and others as well. I want her death to mean something; to stand for something; to effect meaningful real change within that jail. So while it is about my mom it transcends my mom. I want it to be the best effort our community can mobilize to stop the arrogance, incompetence, negligence and disregard for human lives at the Jackson County Detention Center,” said Aguirre.
“I’m determined to go as far as I can in this fight for my mom, and to stop this type of thing from happening again. There is a very real chance that some good and long-lasting changes will come out of it.”
Aguirre invites any interested party to Google ‘Jackson County Detention Center’ for the long history of the tax-funded detention center’s systemic problems, including inmates being raped, brutalized, living in filth and dying.
“Do people realize how easily it could be their own mom, dad, child or sibling who winds up at JCDC, treated with a quiet malice as my mother was?”
“Citizens of Jackson County must stand against basic human rights violations occurring at JCDC. I can’t have my mother back, but I’d like to know her death was not totally in vain.”
Aguirre says it’s time to shine a very bright light into this dark corner of Jackson County.
“I hope others agree with me.”
